Laser seems to be a good therapy for acne without side effects. Lasers and light-based systems has become one of the most common methods to treat a variety of skin disorders, including acne vulgaris, during the last ten years.
Many patients do not respond adequately or develop side effects with the various oral and topical treatments available for treatment of acne. Therefore, the growing demand of patients who suffered from acne for a faster, safer and side-effect-free novel therapy.
The Dermatology and Lasers Clinic from Tel Aviv MSQ, Caesarea, Israel, studied the situation to take the role of light therapy in the armamentarium of treatments for acne vulgaris, to discuss the photo biology aspects and biomedical optics, to review current technologies of laser / light - based devices, to evaluate the clinical experience and results, and to outline clinical guidelines and treatment considerations, as they are reported.
After a series of clinical studies, the results show that 85 percent of patients show a significant quantitative reduction of at least 50 percent of their lesions after four treatments every other week. Approximately 20 percent of the cases show that acne eradication may reach 90 percent. Three months after the last treatment, clearance is approximately 70 percent to 80 percent. In the meantime, has not the respondent rate is 15 percent to 20 percent.
According to researchers, laser and light-based therapy is a safe and effective modality for the treatment of mild to moderate inflammatory acne vulgaris. After comparing the efficacy of oral antibiotics, improvement of acne by light therapy offers faster resolution and fewer side effects and lead to patient satisfaction.
